Sample any song(s) on Tracklib

CeeLo picks out the winner of this competition himself. After working with producers like Danger Mouse, Organized Noize, DJ Premier, Mark Ronson, Timbaland, The Neptunes and The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, it’s safe to say that he’s got an ear for beats...

That’s why this competition allows you to sample any song(s) or multitrack(s) on Tracklib. You can dig as deep as you want to: from 70s soul to rare gems by jazz greats, or explore collections like Psych You Out and Dusty Latin Loops.

Want to get some inspiration from the sound of the Dirty South? In this video, CeeLo Green reminisces about the early days of Goodie Mob and the Dungeon Family, Andre 3000’s speech at the notorious The Source Awards 1995, and recording Goodie Mob’s debut album Soul Food that year in Curtis Mayfield’s home studio.

“Sampling is an essential element of hip-hop. It's the bridge between generations. Some of this music could disappear into obscurity. You may never encounter it unless you're introduced to it [through samples].”

Who is CeeLo Green?

Amidst the heated East Coast vs. West Coast rivalry in the mid-90s, another hip-hop storm was brewing down south: a new scene was emerging in Atlanta with the Dungeon Family collective as pivotal figures. Rapper and singer CeeLo Green was one of those pioneers together with his group Goodie Mob, and like-minded artists including Outkast and production team Organized Noize. Together they paved the way for Southern “Dirty South” hip-hop as we know it since.

As a solo artist, CeeLo Green released two albums in the early 2000s before forming the sample-driven neo-soul duo Gnarls Barkley together with producer Danger Mouse. They're best known for their debut single (and biggest hit) "Crazy" off 2006's platinum-selling album St. Elsewhere. CeeLo continued his solo career in 2010, with the Bruno Mars-penned "Fuck You" as his biggest solo hit to date.

Sampling rules

  • You can use and sample any legally obtained royalty-free sounds for your submission, and you need to sample one (or more) songs on Tracklib — but you cannot sample anything else that you don’t own the full rights to.
  • You can manipulate the song(s) you are sampling however you want; chop it up, reverse it, or find the perfect loop! However, please make sure one sample from Tracklib plays a key role in your submissions — i.e. use the sample throughout or in multiple parts — using it as a one-shot would not be allowed.

Prizing rules

  • The first prize winner will be awarded a sample license to monetize their work, with no need to pay the license fee. The winner will, however, still have to share revenues from the new recording and the copyright in the new composition with the original rightsholders from any revenue earned on the new song. How much depends on your submission's total sampled time and the category of the recording sampled.
  • The prize is as stated. No cash or other alternatives will be offered.
  • The prizes are non-transferable.
